Privacy Policy - DexPocket

Last updated: June 20, 2026

DexPocket ("we", "us", or "our") is committed to protecting the privacy of our users, especially children. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and process your information when you use the DexPocket mobile application (the "App").

DexPocket is designed as a local-first, privacy-respecting exploration tool. The App does not require user accounts, does not contain advertisements, and stores your personal discoveries locally on your device.

1. Information Stored Locally on Your Device

All personal information and activity logs are stored directly on your device using local storage (Hive database and internal app documents folders). This data is never sent to our servers and includes:

  • Profile Information: Nickname, selected avatar character, country, and age. (Age is used strictly to set the vocabulary and complexity level of the AI-generated facts to match your child's stage of development).
  • Discoveries (Creatures): Photos you capture or import, dates of discovery, your text notes (observations), and audio voice recordings.
  • App Settings: Preferred language, theme color, permitted scanning categories, image scan mode, and sorting choices.
  • Voice Memos: Voice recordings you choose to capture are stored as .m4a files on your device. You can delete them at any time, which permanently deletes them from your device.

2. Information Transmitted to Third-Party Services

To provide the AI-powered identification and creature companion character features, the App transmits minimal data to two third-party services:

A. Google Gemini API (Google Generative AI)

When you scan a photo, the App sends the image along with settings to the Google Gemini API (gemini-2.5-flash model) to identify the subject.

Data Sent:
  • The compressed image of the creature/object (with all EXIF metadata, such as precise time/GPS, fully stripped).
  • Language selection.
  • Optional text hints or corrections you input.
  • The selected difficulty level (fun fact detail level) based on age.
  • Your location sharing preference (see Location Data below).

Usage: Google Gemini analyzes the image to return the creature's name, rarity, category, and a kid-friendly fun fact. It does not use this data for training models.

B. Pollinations.ai (Image Generation API)

If you choose to "characterize" or evolve a companion, the App sends a text-only prompt describing the creature's style and environment to Pollinations.ai (image.pollinations.ai).

Data Sent:

A plain English descriptive text prompt (e.g., "A cute baby Pixar-style blue butterfly, official 3D artwork").

Usage: To generate the custom companion illustration. No personal photos, user details, or coordinates are ever shared with Pollinations.ai.

3. Location Data Privacy

DexPocket offers three location sharing preferences, which can be locked by parents:

  • No Location: No geographic information is sent to the AI.
  • Country Only: Sends only the country name from your device locale (e.g., "Japan" or "United States") to help identify regional species.
  • Rough Location: Requests GPS permission and retrieves coordinates, but rounds them to two decimal places (e.g., 35.68, 139.76). This represents a radius of approximately 1.1 kilometers (about 0.7 miles), shielding your exact home address or coordinates while providing enough regional context for the AI to identify local wildlife.

4. Device Permissions Required

The App requests the following permissions only when required by features:

  • Camera: Used to capture photos of creatures to analyze and add to your dictionary.
  • Photo Library / Storage: Used to import existing photos from your gallery and save compressed/companion images.
  • Microphone: Used only when you tap the microphone button in the creature details screen to record your own audio observations. Audio is stored locally and never sent online.
  • Location Services: Used only if the "Rough Location" sharing option is selected.
  • Notifications: Used to notify you when background characterization or companion evolution has completed.

5. Children's Privacy & Parental Gate

DexPocket is designed to be a safe digital playground for children:

  • Parental Gate: Access to the settings panel (where location sharing, scanning rules, and category filters are configured) is protected by a math multiplication puzzle (e.g., 8 × 7 = ?) to ensure adjustments are made by an adult.
  • No Accounts / Login: We do not require usernames, passwords, email addresses, or social logins.
  • No Tracking or Advertising: There are no ads, trackers, analytics scripts, or behavioral tracking in the App.

6. Data Deletion

You are in full control of your data:

  • Deleting Entries: You can delete any discovery from the detail screen. This permanently deletes the database entry, the compressed photo file, and the audio voice note from your device's memory.
  • Full Reset: Uninstalling the App from your device completely and permanently deletes all data, databases, photos, and voice notes.
